The Legend of River Maya

written and edited by Alliah Miranda

Once upon a time, there was an enchanted forest. A forest that has curving branches hung from a couple of trees, a potpourri of flowers and colorful leaves grew all over the place. A tumult of beastly noises, mainly belonging to birds and vermin, filled the air and overpowered the rustling of the leaves and branches of the treetops in the wind. Then, there was a lovely lady, named Maya, who lived in the enchanted forest. Maya has a magical voice that can attract many men. She was also a hardworking and caring granddaughter. Her parents died as a result of a natural disaster that struck their land. She does not have a lover yet because she is preoccupied with her grandmother who is ill. Her grandmother, on the other hand, is always telling her about love stories.

A hunter, named Peri arrived while Maya was singing beneath the tree, which was her favorite place to rest. Peri was a handsome witch hunter and a well-known one, having defeated 5 witches there. He was outraged at them because they were the cause of his father's death. Peri passed through the enchanted forest because he was captivated by Maya's magical voice.

Peri: Good day, lovely lady! You have a lovely voice.

Maya: Oh, thank you! But what exactly are you doing here?

Peri: I was walking around looking for a witch when I heard a beautiful voice and decided to look for it.

Maya: I see! But you must be careful. By the way, what’s your name, handsome boy? Peri: I’m Peri, it is nice to meet you…

Maya: Maya.

Peri had always visited Maya's favorite spot since their first meet, and Maya had always sung for Peri, especially his favorite love song "You'll Be Safe Here." As it turned out, they began to develop feelings for one another. Maya let Peri enter her heart because she remembered what her grandmother had told her. It raises her consciousness and eagerness to develop a relationship. She immediately fell in love with Peri since he was both alluring and gentlemanly. Of course, he genuinely loved Maya and they were considered the epitome of God's love.

While Peri was on his way to surprise Maya with his proposal, a powerful witch, named Mau, appeared. However, the witch's true appearance was not recognized because she transformed herself into a beautiful and flawless woman. When the witch saw Peri, she pretended to be injured and in need of assistance.

Mau: Mister! I desperately need your help.

Peri: Oh! What happened? Do not move. I am going to help you.

As a result, Peri leaped at the chance to help the great pretender witch. However, he had no idea that the witch would use her power over Peri to make him vanish. He also did not realize Mau was always watching him whenever he visited the enchanted forest.

Mau: At last! after weeks of spying on you, I now have the opportunity to kill you, great hunter! (with matching evil laugh).

Peri: NOOO!! You cannot do this to me!

Maya was wondering why Peri had not come to her favorite spot after how many hours. So, Maya started looking for him. She was shocked when she saw Peri's clothes on the ground. A ring and a letter fell from her grasp as she held Peri's clothes. The letter contained the words "Will you marry me, Maya, my love?" and she burst into tears.

Even though days, months, and years had passed, Maya was still crying in pain and agony and her tears had suddenly formed into a river. And later on, Maya also died because she could no longer bear the pain. The people who lived in the enchanted forest believed that the river is cursed because whenever there was an adventurer or a hunter who tried to drink its water are cursed. It is a curse that will give you an immeasurable pain that lasts for a lifetime. And this is where the legend is born and named the river after Maya and they called it “River Maya,” or “Legend of River Maya.”

THE END.
